AKATeen Rites of Passage
Mentoring Program

The AKATeen Rites of Passage Program is designed to cultivate and begin the transformation of high school girls into young productive women.

What is a Rite of Passage?

Rites of passage in adolescence are a cross-cultural phenomenon. They have existed throughout human history and may be a significant factor in the development of a stable adult personality. broken down into its most basic elements, a rite of passage involves:

  1. A separation from society

  • Attending bi-weekly meetings

  • Participated in scheduled retreats

 

  2. Instruction from an elder

  • The myriad of workshops presented cover life skill training, personal development, ancestral history, public speaking, goal setting and financial preparedness.

   3. A transition (in the case of adolescence, from child to adult)

  • This mentoring program concentrates on girls in their transition into womanhood, fostering responsibility, miserliness, pride accountability from all participants. 

  • During the program participants engage in community service, two (2) retreats, attend an etiquette dinner and learn traditional African dance.

​

   4. A welcoming back into society with acknowledgment of adolescent's changed status.

  • The format of the ceremony, involving family and community will visibly show the maturation of participants' transformation, prayers and blessings, traditional food, dance and dress, and inspirational music and songs.
