Scholarships

The eight scholarships sponsored by the Corporation are the Grace Wheeler Memorial Scholarship, the Irma Wilson Memorial Scholarship, the Thora Dudley Memorial Scholarship and the Wheeler, Wilson and Johnson HBCU Scholarship and the Eta Omega Omega Rites of Passage Scholarship for a graduating initiate of the Rites of Passage Program.  We also have one scholarship, the Dorothy Sharpe-Hart Memorial scholarship for students with an IEP and one scholarship, the Former President Scholarship for a student attending a community college.

 

Every four years,  $3,000 scholarships are awarded to students for four years of study in a college or university. 

 

In Spring 2023 we are offering four; one year scholarships ONLY. 

* 2 - scholarships at $3000 each

*2 scholarships at $1000 each

The scholarship recipient with the highest Grade Point Average receives the Bessie Johnson Memorial Scholarship which is an additional $500.

The WWJ 2023 Scholarship intake process is now OPEN, above are the 2022 Scholarship winners. 

Eligibility Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

​

  • A written application (including an essay)

  • Two written recommendations (one from a school official/one from community leader or workplace employer)

  • School Official Form

  • Official High School Transcript

  • Community Service

  • Academic Performance

  • Extra-curricular Activities and Work Experience

  • Application Presentation

Submission and Deadline

​

Applications must be RECEIVED by Friday May 5, 2023.

Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

 

  • Scholarship Finalists will be notified no later than May , 2023 to present themselves for a personal interview before the scholarship committee.

  • The scholarship recipients MUST attend the Final Rites of Passage Ceremony event on

       _ TBA 2023_.

Wheeler, Wilson &  Johnson HBCU Scholarship: 1 Year - $3,000.00

*Preference maybe given for Bronx residency or attending a high school in the Bronx

a)    Is attending an Historically Black College or University (HBCU) for the 2023-2024 school year

b)    Actively involved in community service

c)    Applying for financial aid in addition to receiving this scholarship

Eta Omega Omega Rites of Passage Scholarship: 1 Year - $3,000.00

​

a)    Has successfully completed the WWJ Rites of Passage Program

b)    Actively involved in community service

c)    Attending a four-year college or university in the Fall of 2023 school year

d)    Applying for financial aid in addition to receiving this scholarship

Dorothy Sharpe-Hart Memorial Scholarship: 1 Year - $1000.00

a)    Has an IEP, graduated high school and attending college

b)    Actively involved in community service

c)    Applying for financial aid in addition to receiving this scholarship

Former President Scholarship: 1 Year - $1000.00

a)    Is attending a community/ junior college or trade school

b)    Actively involved in community service

To be awarded to an African American Student who:

​

a)    Is a Bronx Resident or attends school in the Bronx

b)    Is community minded and exercise community service

c)    Attending a four-year college starting in the fall of 2026

d)   Applying for financial aid in addition to receiving this scholarship​

Irma Wilson Scholarship: 4 Year - $3,000.00 (Available Spring 2026)​

a)    Is actively involved in community service.

b)    Is a Bronx Resident or attending school in the Bronx.

c)    Has a cumulative average of 70% or higher and 90% attendance or better

d)    Attending a four-year college starting in the fall of 2026

e)    Applying for financial aid in addition to receiving this scholarship

Thora Dudley: 4 Year - $3,000.00 (Available Spring 2026)

To be awarded to an African American Student who:

​

a)    Both attends school and resides in the Bronx

b)    Is actively involved in community service

c)    Has a cumulative average of 90% or higher and 90% attendance or better

d)   Attending a four-year college starting in the fall of 2026

e)   Applying for financial aid in addition to receiving this scholarship​​
